The Flood October 2004 As some of you may have seen on the news, we had a bit of bad weather in Cornwall during October 2004. The following pictures show the effect this had on Mevagissey. A combination of one of the highest tides of the year, low atmospheric pressure and a fierce wind driving the waves inland caused the highest tide seen in the village for over 25 years......... The tide came in on Tuesday evening and just kept coming in. Those of you who know Mevagissey will realise from the above picture, just how far it reached. The harbour just seemed to vanish Fortunately, we didn't suffer any flood damage..... However the 90mph winds ripped our roof to bits. We had to close and the Council cordoned off the area in the interest of public safety. The damage was so bad that the whole roof needed replacing. So we had weeks of scaffolders and roofers to contend with. Things got a bit damp for the shops, pubs and restaurants down by the harbour edge. Waves crashed over the inner harbour wall At one point, the outer harbour wall vanished beneath the waves and only the lighthouse was visible.
